Hail, hail Garland Jeffreys

garland jeffreys at wxpnGarland Jeffreys, Rolling Stone magazine’s new artist of the year in 1977, has a new CD out and a concert tour to promote it. He put on a smooth nine-song show 6/24/11 before more than 200 people at the WXPN free-at-noon concert at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. The crowd reacted warmly if not wildly — Jeffreys tried his best to stir the fans, but the crowd trended older and at age 67 he isn’t the frenzied showman sliding across the stage on his knees. He gave it a good effort, though, including jumping into the crowd toward show’s end. Below are my videos of him singing “Wild in the Streets” and “Hail Hail Rock n Roll.” Jeffreys said he plans to tour for the next two years. Ken Tucker praises the new CD, “The King of In Between,” on Fresh Air at this link.
