Steve Forbert @ Bryn Mawr

Steve Forbert at Bryn Mawr, June 12, 2010
Smilin' Steve ForbertSteve Forbert performed before several hundred Main Line-restrained but appreciative fans Saturday night as part of the Bryn Mawr Twilight Concerts program. I’ve been attending Forbert concerts since 1979 and he smiled more during this one than at any I’ve ever seen. He’s one of the hardest-working small-venue performers and has cultivated a steady following in the Philadelphia area over the years. Both he and the crowd had an old-friends attitude toward each other, and what the crowd lacked in vigor was made up for in affection.

It was a humid 80 degrees and there was a hint of suspense with a storm knocking around to the west. It never arrived.

He sang his audience-response “The Oil Song” — updated with the current spill in the gulf. Check it out here.

Steve Forbert emotesWhen he sang “In the Jailhouse Now,” complete with yodeling, a little dog in the crowd began barking urgently. It was carried away like a crying baby.

Without being specific, he several times he alluded to audience’s pedigree. At one point he was grasping for the word for birdwatchers. “What is it?” he asked, and about two dozen people hollered “ornithologist!” After laughing, he said: “Let’s see Brittany Spears do that one!”
