April in Cape May

Osprey over Cape May PointA sunny 75-degree day in Cape May is perfect — especially when it’s pushing 90 degrees in Philly, on an April day no less. The ViCape May Point lighthousectorian B&Bs and other businesses are getting ready for summer, lots of ladders up and touch-up work going on. The number of people at the beach and on the streets was more than I’d expected, but a drop in the bucket compared to a hot July day. At the Lobster House, the raw bar wasn’t open yet and the pier was blocked so that fewer than usual tables were available alongside the fishing boats. On the sand, beach tags were not required. You’ll have to go after Memorial Day if you want to pay the $5 daily fee (or $10 for three days). At the lighthouse at Cape May Point, the beach was even quieter. Dolphins slipped by, ospreys hauled home fresh seafood, and muskrats poked around the marsh just outside the big dune.Cape May Point, with Cape May in distanceCape May Point sunbather, April 7, 2010
