Tale of the towers

The smokestack in the foreground, symbol of an earlier industrial age, stands in contrast to the Philadelphia skyline where another symbol, the Comcast Tower, rises as the city’s new tallest building. The new HQ for the country’s biggest cable communications company outclimbs One Liberty Place, previously the city’s tallest. To the right is City Hall (its statue of William Penn shrouded in scaffolding), which at about 45 stories was Philly’s tallest peak until 1985 when One Liberty Place became its first real skyscraper. The photo was taken during a traffic delay across the Delaware River on Interstate 676 in Camden, N.J., on Sept. 30.
