The stages of dining on crab

The seagull floating just off the wooden deck of the Deauville Inn, Strathmere, N.J., dipped its head into the shallows and came up with plump crab. The bird flew a few feet to a strip of sand and lingered a few seconds until it was clear the crustacean was secure, then sailed off to dine alone, away from the prying eyes of the competition.
