This Gomphotherium is just one member of a prehistoric menagerie rising around Borrego Springs, Calif., a fanciful public art project that eventually will see a couple dozen of the region’s early inhabitants re-created at the behest of Dennis Avery, owner of Galleta Meadows Estate.
